2000 Honda Insight

Insight

These were Honda’s first iteration of the gas/electric hybrid automobile, and they aimed to maximize efficiency with a lightweight all aluminum chassis / body, and a super aerodynamic shape. Cruising on a flat open highway, it’s possible to record 70mpg averages. I usually see 50-55mpg around town, and mid 60’s on the freeways with the hills. This 5-speed manual transmission example has covered a whopping 327,000 miles and is still going strong. It was sold new at Mel Rapton Honda in Sacramento CA, and has been in Northern California ever since. From a few feet away it still looks good, but it’s probably not going to win the preservation class at the next hybrid car show. Mechanically it’s been well maintained. I’ve done the following work in the last 3 years and 5,000 miles during my ownership:

New (4/2019) Greentech 8amp Hybrid battery ($1695) and still has a year of warranty
New front brake rotors / and brake pads (10/2018)
New tires
Left front sway bar link replaced
New radiator
New EGR valve
Cleaned out the EGR plate

Under previous ownership - in 2016 at 292,385 miles:
Transmission was rebuilt ,New Clutch, Surfaced flywheel, Rear Main Seal, Reconditioned front axles, Valve Adjustment, new engine mounts. The windshield was replaced in 2013.

Headlights are clear, and everything works, including the auto-stop function. (When in traffic, coming to a stop, if it’s in neutral, it will shut off to save fuel, and then restart when you engage 1st gear.) Lighting, signals, AC and heat work, it has an aftermarket cruise control and a stereo with bluetooth and remote speaker for phone connectivity. Drivers side seat bolster is worn, but the seat itself is not broken down or soft. Under the makeshift floor mats, drivers side carpeting shows wear.

The bodywork is decent, but there are some scratches on the passenger door, chips on top of the rear bumper cover, and the rear license plate lights are missing. The engine under tray has been replaced with an aftermarket aluminum piece. The front left corner of the bumper had deep scratches in the plastic, and I smoothed them and that corner is painted flat silver and doesn’t match. Part of the stock under tray in front of the left wheel (under flat silver corner) is partially missing, so perhaps it’s giving up .005% in aerodynamics. Paint is thin in the left front corner of the hood and in the center of the roof, but it’s aluminum, so it won’t rust. This was my 2-person carpool lane airport runner, but I’m not flying for work, so it’s time to make some space. Runs and drives well. Smog certificate in hand, and ready for your commuting or hypermiling adventures. Receipts, original owners manual, and original window sticker are present.

$ It was priced to move, and it did.
